Course Announcements and Handouts for the SPRING 2010 Offering

  1. The seminar theme for Spring 2010 is POPULATION GENETICS. We will mainly cover the entire book Principles of Population Genetics, by Hartl and Clark (Fourth Edition), but will supplement the text with papers from the literature and chapters from other books. For the book website, click here.

    1. Genetic and phenotypic variation.
    2. Organization of genetic variation.
    3. Random genetic drift.
    4. Mutation and the neutral theory.
    5. Darwinian selection.
    6. Inbreeding, population subdivision, and migration.
    7. Molecular population genetics.
    8. Evolutionary quantitative genetics.
    9. Population genomics.
    10. Human population genetics.

Course Information

  • Meeting time and place: TBA (Once a week, 2 hours).
  • Permission of the instructor is required.
  • The course can be repeated for credit, depending on the topics covered.
  • Topics: This seminar will cover advanced topics in computational biology that are not covered by any other courses at Rice University. These topics may be covered in books, dissertations, or papers. See the syllabus of the specific semester for the relevant topics covered.
  • Grading: The grading system is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory. To receive an S in the course a student must actively participate in the discussions and presentations.
  • Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments or accommodations is requested to speak with me during the first two weeks of class. All discussions will remain confidential. Students with disabilities will need to also contact Disability Support Services in the Ley Student Center.
